L'affaire Chebeya, un crime d'Etat ?

Belgium // 2011 // Couleur // 94'
French/Lingala with French subtitles

In the Congo, the name of Floribert Chebaya is a watchword for resistance and the struggle for the liberty of the individual. Chebeya founded one of the Congo’s first human rights NGOs. In the summer of 2010, his lifeless body was discovered on the outskirts of Kinshasa. His chauffeur had disappeared. The official version of these events referred to a “sex crime” while rumors of a political crime ran rife. The government was obliged to react and several inspectors and high-level police officers were put on trial by a military court.
Back in his favorite location, i.e. Africa, Thierry Michel attempts to unravel the drama that caused the death of an activist. His camera captures the hearings, the investigation, the testimonies of the victims’ families and the lawyers on both sides. Through this trial, the film reveals a population hungering for justice and a country eaten away by impunity and the corruption of those in power.
