Sopravvivere al Diavolo; Haiti dopo il terremoto (Survivre au diable)
Switzerland // 2011 //
Couleur // 55'
Italian/Creole with French subtitles
Everyone remembers the terrible earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, causing more than 250,000 deaths and leaving a million people homeless. The world’s media covered the first period of the catastrophe while NGOs arrived en masse. And then, silence. Haiti was no longer in the headlines.
Interested in what happened afterwards, director Fulvio Bernasconi visited the almost totally destroyed city of Léogâne regularly over the months following the catastrophe, filming the trials and tribulations and the fate of four Léogâne inhabitants. Their personal testimonies reveal the problems of a whole country: corruption of those in power, citizen protest demonstrations, a cholera epidemic, NGOs failing to cooperate with each other – the hopes for reconstruction dashed by the incapability of successive governments to protect their people.
