Rafael Correa, a would-be hero for our times? In 2006, Correa is elected president of Ecuador. A top-level economist, he reforms from top to bottom a mode of government that is suffocating the country. Archaic structures are replaced by a participatory democracy and by independent, social and ecological policies. An innovative approach to globalization and social relations and a refusal to submit to a monolithic economic liberalism emerge. Correa dares to reject part of the international debt burden on Ecuador’s population and envisages the distribution of natural resources in the interests of environmental sustainability. By giving a hearing to his detractors, Ecuador avoids being one-sided and opens up the debate on the future of our societies. Sarrasin’s film offers solutions, a vision of utopia that counters the temptation to be fatalistic.
