At the height of the MacCarthy era, the government is keeping a close eye on renowned author Alfred Miller. He asks his childhood friend Howard Prince, a humble dishwasher in a little restaurant, to stand in for him. Prince, camped up by Woody Allen as a perfect anti-hero, accepts. And quickly realizes that the scheme can net him lots of money. Until, that is, an investigative commission summons him to appear…
Martin Ritt used his own experience when he dreamt up this incredible story. The director’s artistic and humanist involvement had already alerted the MacCarthy censorship of his first work, Edge of the City, a powerful plea against racism. Like his script-writer Walter Berstein, Ritt was a prime target for the witch hunters.
