The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Sweden // 2011 // Couleur // 93'
English with French subtitles

This exceptional documentary tells the story of the emergence and development of the Black Panther movement in the United States between 1967 and 1975. Images extracted by the director from footage (on grainy 16mm film) found in the archives of the Swedish television and interviews of Afro-American activists and musicians of that era are interspersed with the voices of present-day artists and intellectuals. We rediscover the militant eloquence of Stokely Carmichael, who traveled the world over to defend the cause of the Black Panthers, earning him the title of honorary prime minister; the anti-racial struggles; Martin Luther King’s campaign of non-violence; and, of course, the combat of the Afro-American revolutionary movement. Another important figure in the film is the Black Panthers’ muse Angela Davis. The footage was shot many years ago while she was in prison, but today her quiet, determined voice echoes on long after the film has ended.
