Conference by Edouard Waintrop

3 March/17:00/ Grütli

The United States on the eve of the 1950s. Fueled by the paranoia of Senator Joseph McCarthy, a veritable inquisition was unleashed against any person suspected of having communist sympathies. The "witch hunt" was on, freedom of conscience and of expression was disregarded. Even in one's intimate privacy. The sexuality of citizens was scrutinized, and homosexuality was taboo. Artistic circles, Hollywood in particular, were the target of ruthless censorship. From 1948, film-makers, scriptwriters and actors were hounded on. Many were subpoenaed to be questioned by the House Un-American Activities Committee, imprisoned or blacklisted. Some big names went into exile; others went on producing under assumed names. The world' largest dream factory suddenly froze. The McCarthy madness came to an end in 1954, but the political aftershocks would be felt for years thereafter.

In partnership with the FIFDH, the Grütli Cinemas pay homage to these professionals of the "seventh art." The program includes a conference and a selection of three feature films. Produced in different eras, they all expose the dysfunctions of American society. Joseph Losey left the country, Martin Ritt was indicted. Although Frank Capra fared better, some of his films were placed on the index.
