Creative Documentaries

Since the first film screenings of the Lumière brothers in the 19th century, cinema has reflected elements of the documentary genre. A form of realist art par excellence, documentary film has served as a medium to engage and reflect on the human experience. Investigatory in nature, it has essentially served to further the cause of human rights.

The “Creative documentaries” in competition reflect the diversity and dynamism of this genre. Through personal testimonies in The missing picture by Rithy Pahn awarded at Cannes, the investigative documentary Who is Dayani Cristal? by Gael Garcia Bernal and Marc Silver, through portraits of activists and revolutionaries in Return to Homs by Talal Derki and ArtWar by Marco Wilms, through the denunciation of human rights violations in The Sound of Torture by Keren Shayo, and through the personal struggle for dignity in Light Fly, Fly High by Beathe Hofseth and Susann Østigaard, the ten films in competition combine art and the search for meaning that inhabits us all.
